ABSTRACT
¡@¡@The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of dietary fiber on the growth performance, feed efficiency and carcass characteristics of the TLRI Black Pig No. 1¡]TB¡^and the Landrace pigs¡]L¡^.¡@A total of 48 TB pigs were randomly allocated into 3 groups by litter and genders and fed diets containing 4¢H, 6¢H and 8¢H crude fiber, respectively. Besides, 16 Landrace pigs were divided into two groups and fed 4¢H and 6¢H crude fiber diets. The feeding trial was started when the body weight of pigs was 50±5 kg and terminated when pigs reached 100 kg.¡@Pigs were slaughtered and the daily weight gain, feed efficiency and carcass characteristics were measured. The results indicated that the increase of dietary crude fiber from 4¢H to 8¢H significantly¡]P¡Õ0.05¡^decreased the feed efficiency of the TB pig. Nevertheless, there was no difference in feed efficiency when the dietary fiber was increased from 4¢H to 6¢H. There was no dietary effect on the carcass weight and length, backfat thickness, dressing percentage, loin eye area or lean percentage of the TB and Landrace pigs. The backfat thickness, abdominal fat and total fat of the TB pigs tended to decrease with the increase of crude fiber contents. No difference was observed in the water content, protein, fat or ash of the meats from the TB and the Landrace pigs provided with graded levels of dietary fiber. The tenderness and acceptability of the pork from TB pig tended to be higher than the Landrace pigs. Longissimus dorsi from TB pigs fed diet with 6¢H crude fiber won the best credit when the pork was evaluated by a panel test.¡]Key Words¡GTLRI Black No. 1 Pig, Finishing pig, Crude fiber, Growth performance, Carcass characteristics¡^
